Gujarat Riots: Highlights of SIT Closure Report

The SIT closure report, which gave a clean chit to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in post-Godhra riots, puts light on a conspiracy behind the charges against Modi. The report says that Narendra Modi and the state took all possible measures to prevent the massacre.

Here are some points from the SIT report, complied by Vijay (@centerofright) in twitter:

‘Journalism’ and the Modi Bashing Cottage Industry - Vineetha Menon, India Wires

The riots that took place in Gujarat in 2002 were unfortunate, akin to any riot that take place in the country or in the world. However, the Gujarat riots stand isolated in nature, for a unique purpose. The episode is seen more as an unending conspiracy crusade by a relentless team comprising of Teesta Setalvad, Sanjiv Bhatt, Sreekumar, Mukul Sinha and yes: some inevitable ubiquitous journalists. Their end goal is obvious and specific: vilify, demonize and slander Chief Minister of Narendra Modi. And the garb they use? ‘The so called justice’.

What we have been witnessing for quite some time in India is biased news at its best: this time Times of India has done complete justice to the aspect. Mainstream media, especially TOI has been quite vocal about the report related to Gujarat riots given by Raju Ramakrishnan, the Amicus Curiae. The entire report has never given any dismal picture about Narendra Modi. It has however a sentence which means vaguely that if circumstances go in a certain direction, there might be a possibility of Modi being prosecuted. Mainstream media swooped down on the sentence, made a monster out of the same and plastered the walls of their news displays “Amicus Curiae says investigate Modi”. DNA at least had the sense to edit their title at a later stage (see the image). Many news sources still shamelessly retain their old titles.

Here comes the obvious question: why is the mainstream media silent about the SIT report which has given a clean chit to Modi? Mainstream media says everything under the sun, except the clean chit given to Modi. Instead the bandwagon has been highlighting the Amicus Curiae’s statement which is a fragment of a complete report, which further is a chip of the major SIT report.

This is not the first time TOI has done its dirty trick. In 2012, the Godhra episode trailed behind by 10 years. TOI decided to capitalize the event. They embarked on their favourite pastime : Modi hunting, this time with a special dedication to their Ahmedabad edition. The front page was streaked with a ‘Godhra Report, TOI Version’. The day was referred to as ‘Doomsday’, with a title ‘Action, Reaction and Inaction’. For those of you who have perused the report, they had proclaimed their version of judgement, a multiple number of times, before the Honourable Court of India pronounced the real judgement. TOI’s judgement was based on assumption and myths, with a glaring absence of any shred of evidence. The judgement was declared in title: ‘inaction’, obviously daggering the Chief Minister. What followed on the entire page was a single sided report, supposedly a list of occurrences of the day.

I am curious: the Anti-Sikh Riots and Massacre of Kashmiri Pundits are some of the worst episodes of gore witnessed by modern India. Does TOI and other mainstream media houses observe the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots the same way? So far, nothing has been seen on the Decennial, Vicennial observances of the gruesome incident which spanned for 4 days from 31 October 1984 − 3 November 1984, where Congressmen mercilessly slaughtered 2,700 Sikhs. No reports ever, so far voicing concern for those 20, 000 who fled Delhi and 50, 000 who were displaced. TOI has not yet taken up similar campaigns on the largely displaced and badly scarred Kashmiri Pandit community that still awaits justice.

SIT report, which is the outcome of a long investigation, prepared by a team after 3 years has not even a murmur in the media. But solitary utterances by a person or so gets blown out of proportion. The ‘controversial meeting convened by Narendra Modi’ was attended by other senior officers as well. Has any one of us ever heard their statements ringing out? However, the statement made by a rogue elephant gets full coverage. Sanjiv Bhatt is media’s latest darling as his statements and views are palatable to media houses. The larger picture is easily discernible: there is a vested interest behind their stories.

Coming to the present scenario, lets begin with the shocking revelation made by the Special Investigation Team, regarding the role of media, to be precise ‘Times of India’, in the ‘Narendra Modi Vilification Campaign’: the reports reveal how Manoj Mitta, TOI journalist helped in the drafting of a cleverly structured ‘anti-Modi affidavit’. He was the one who added flesh and spice into a cartload of defamation originally framed by Sanjiv Bhatt. And so with the entire affidavit looking spruced up, Sanjiv Bhatt marched to the Supreme Court.

Quoting the paragraph in the report where the SIT exposes one among those numerous dirty plots hatched by the Anti-Modi conspirators:

That Ms. Teesta Setalwad, her lawyer Shri Mihir Desai and Journalist Shri Manoj Mitta of Times of India were in constant touch with Shri Sanjiv Bhatt, IPS and were instrumental in arranging / drafting of the affidavit for filing the same in honourable Supreme court. Vide email dated 10-4-2011, Shri Bhatt solicited “Co-ordinates” from Ms. Teesta Setalwad, who had also arranged for a meeting with her lawyer Shri Mihir Desai at Ellis bridge Gymkhana, Ahmedabad. Shri Sanjiv Bhatt sent the first draft of his proposed affidavit to Shri Manoj Mitta on 13-4-2011, after meeting Shri Mihir Desai, Advocate and invited his suggestions. Shri Manoj Mitta advised Shri Sanjiv Bhatt to incorporate a few more paragraphs drafted by him which were incorporated by Shri Sanjiv Bhatt in his final affidavit sent to honorable Supreme Court of India as suggested by Shri Mitta.

Let us cast Mitta aside for some time and tackle the main perpetrator: mainstream media house, this time, again, Times of India. The news house seems to have gone rabid by splashing their website with so- called news clips, which contain anything but credibility. Taking up 3 of their latest news pieces:

• The first one speaks of Sanjiv Bhatt being a ‘pivot’. Bhatt has been a proven conspirator in more than a single way. 9 police officers who were quizzed in the most intricate manner, separately have testified that Sanjiv Bhatt was not present in the meeting. This is enough for any discerning human to understand that Bhatt is lying. And if this is meagre evidence, the SIT has a 40 page section dedicated solely to Bhatt and his misgivings.
  “certain vested interests including Shri Sanjiv Bhatt, different NGOs, and some political leaders were trying to use honorable Supreme Court/SIT as a forum for settling their scores”.
  “Shri Sanjiv Bhatt had been colluding with the persons with vested interests to see that some kind of charge-sheet is filed against Shri Narendra Modi and others.”
  However, TOI has been craftily avoiding everything else, coming up with the statement saying that the statements given by other police officers in the meeting is the only evidence that stands against Bhatt. Either they wrote the story without reading the SIT report (which is open to the general public now) or they turned chef and cooked a brilliant lie with the most obvious intention. According TOI, the 3 years of rigorous ground work put in by the SIT commissioned by the Supreme Court of India stands void.

• The second news piece published by TOI voices a doubt if Narendra Modi paid for SIT Chief Raghavan’s foreign trips. The clip is not a news piece. It is based on multiple suppositions and assumptions and with a plunge into conclusion that Raghavan might have undertaken a foreign trip for which the Gujarat Government might have paid.Any proof TOI?Going by this wonderful logic of clubbing together suppositions to arrive at a conclusion, let us come back to the curious case of Manoj Mitta, a die hard anti-Ayodhya writer (his articles gives one the feeling that he never wants the temple to be built). Now, the Karsevaks returning from Ayodhya, were burnt in the train in 2002- the very same Karsevaks, who demolished the mosques, seeking the Hindu’s rights for re-establishing their temple. The scorching of the Karsevaks was obviously by an anti-Ayodhya crowd. And since Manoj Mitta has been ‘anti-Ayodhya’ in outlook, is it sane and sensible to suppose that he had a hand in the Godhra riots? (The same logic behind ‘if A=B and B=C, then A=C’)
  

No, is it not? Well, TOI, you need to learn much from your own stories!!

• The third news clip speaks of the Chief Minister doing his best to curb the lawlessness that engulfed his land, but with a dig referring to him as ‘awfully busy Narendra Modi‘. Now, Narendra Modi is, as stated by media (truthfully, for once) a busy man. Step into the state of Gujarat and you can see what the person has been doing to justify for his ‘busy-ness‘. The state looks bloomed- not superficially, but from its very depths. Coming back to the riot-ridden days, Narendra Modi was indeed ‘awfully busy’, not lazing about sun-warming himself.
  ‘Narendra Modi‘, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, whose land was seized by riots, was “awfully busy with the steps to control the law and order situation, providing medical treatment to the riot victims, their rehabilitation, giving ex-gratia payment to the riot affected, NGO relief camps and with the payment of compensation for destruction of properties during the riots, and also with his efforts to restore peace and normalcy in the state,” says the SIT report. The report even states that the Army was brought in, at the right time. Why has TOI conveniently chosen the first two words of an entire paragraph, blissfully choosing to ignore the rest of the statement?

Not just now, but from the very minute the riots began, nasty journalism reinvented itself, with a new face. Quoting as example, Modi’s answer to SIT team, when he was thoroughly interrogated, where he exposed how Times of India ‘conducted an interview with him, without even contacting him’. When exposed, they hurriedly cooked up their denial story, which was cozily tucked up in some remote corner of the TOI newspaper.

Is it so, NDTV? The actual SIT report says this:

What NDTV has done is selective quoting, by omitting a large section, making it appear again that …. Narendra Modi resorted to ‘illegal orders’ ! Shame on you NDTV. CNN IBN is not the least behind, when it comes to this kind of selective reporting.

This is not an isolated case of title manipulation by NDTV. Another interesting case was a mammoth blunder made by NDTV. Here goes it: 15 February, 2012, when many were waiting for the Gujarat court’s verdict: will a copy of the SIT report be handed over to Zakia Jaffrey or not? Court verdict said ‘No”. But NDTV had a kept ready, a copy of what can be termed as ‘media’s verdict’: ‘Give the 2002 riot reports to Zakia Jaffrey: Gujarat Court to SIT’. With the report ready, the same was published by them on their website, without actually looking into the real facts. There must have been jubilation and celebrations and the channel repeatedly nailed Narendra Modi on TV. Suddenly the story went off air, for mysterious reasons. Later the reason was known- the actual verdict by the court was something else: ‘No Report for Zakia in Gujarat Riots Case: Court’ . NDTV hurriedly made its correction and covered its folly by not taking up the issue for a couple of hours.

For mainstream media, ‘Narendra Modi’ continues to be its favourite fodder, vital for existence. Blame Narendra Modi, vilify Narendra Modi, add Narendra Modi as spice to the most irrelevant aspect and garner fame… the media tactics spinning around the Chief Minister of Gujarat are numerous. Media, as we see, will do anything to remain in the limelight and increase its viewership. They will also do anything to earn a few extra coins. They have known well enough that demonizing Narendra Modi incessantly will keep their pockets jingling with the yellow metal and so they continue to do it for ever….

US should give Narendra Modi visa

Dear Ms. Ros-Lehtinen,

This is regarding non-binding resolution (H Res 569) "recognising the 10th anniversary of the tragic communal violence in Gujarat", which was introduced in the House of Representatives by Congressman Keith Ellison. I would like to condemn this resolution, register my protest against it, and would request you to please reject it in toto by voting against it. It tramples on the democratic freedom enshrined in the Indian constitution and interferes with the workings and sovereignty of the world's largest democracy. Rest assured world's largest democracy (India) is mature enough to take care of itself and does not need world's oldest democracy (USA) to encroach on former's freedom and pontificate to it. In this prejudiced resolution, Shri Narendra Modi is needlessly accused of committing a fictitious "pogrom" without any shred of evidence against him but rather on the basis of mere hearsay of some professor and an article from a disreputable magazine. Canards spread by anti-Modi campers are no different than those spread by vile individuals who claim that 9/11 was an inside job. Really? US allegedly pulled of massacre of its own 8000 citizens and no one involved in the know-how called it out. Unbelievable! Similarly it is not possible that Shri Narendra Modi did any of what is being alleged and I prove it below in detail as to why and how.

Professor Ashutosh Varshney, who is a self proclaimed "expert" on riots in India (as if riots happen there everyday), has casually claimed that 2002 Gujarat riots were "first full-blooded pogrom in independent India". This is far from true and absolutely abhorring. Other than the fact that Mr. Varshney is making a mockery of human misery, he and Congressman Ellison are misleading the House as the "first full-blooded pogrom in independent India" was in 1984 when over 8000 Sikhs were mass murdered and displaced in a state sponsored pogrom by then ruling CONgress party goons under the alleged order of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who trivialized the mass murder of Sikhs by saying "When a big tree falls, the earth shakes" (http://www.tribuneindia.com/2003/20031102/spectrum/main1.htm). I know because my Hindu family gave shelter to some of our Sikh brethren and countrymen in our house to protect them from CONgress party goons. As unfortunate as Gujarat riot was, what happened there was Muslim-Hindu riot in which 270 Hindus and 720 Muslims died. It started after a Muslim mob burnt alive 59 children, women, and men by locking them in a train, drowsing train in petrol and lighting it on fire in a terrorist attack. They were Hindu pilgrims who were returning in a train after visiting one of Hindus holiest sites of Ayodhya. 2002 Gujarat riot was not a pogrom.

Tehelka (means "spread fear" in Hindi) magazine that Congressman Ellison has quoted from is known for writing canards and provocative prejudiced articles. Such references cannot hold water in any court of law, let alone be enough to be used as corroboration for indicting a 3 times democratically elected Chief Minister against whom even the Honorable Indian Supreme Court has not found any evidence of complicity, commission and omission. All these allegations are mere hearsay.

In addition to above, this resolution seems to be categorically written to target peace loving Hindu community and its repugnant language is clearly written to provoke backlash against Hindus. This resolution will gratuitously demonize 3.5 million strong and patriotic Hindu-American community. Congressman Ellison should rather be censured for wasting tax payers money and for maligning Hindus. His actions are totally uncalled for.

I would like to bring to your kind notice the following a well balanced article by Brookings Institution on the excellent work that Shri Narendra Modi is doing in Gujarat. Rather than dumbing down the aforementioned article with Hinduphobic bigotry as most of Shri Modi's detractors in the media do, because they find him to be an easy punching bag, Mr. Antholis chose to write a seemingly unbiased article. It is hard to find an article on Shri Modi that is not filled with hearsay canards and baseless allegations leveled against him without a shred of an evidence. In such case, this article has come as a breath of a fresh air and I commend Brookings Institution and Mr. Antholis for this effort.

At the outset, I would like to make my opinion very clear that I believe it would be an honor for US to give Shri Narendra Modi visa. I think US should give him visa and extend him an official state invitation to come and do business with US based companies. He is the man whom we need right now to help us jump start our dwindling US economy by creating partnership between us and Gujarat based businesses in specific and Bharatiya companies in general. Why? Following are some of my observations to support my viewpoint:

1. I do not think that Shri Modi needs US endorsement per-say in the form of a visa, rather it is in the best interest of our economy to give him visa and invite him to freely travel to US. Many US based companies are already benefiting by doing business in his state and are finding his no-nonsense incorruptible leadership extremely gratifying. Recently Ford Motors laid foundation for $1 billion car factory in Sanand, one of Shri Modi's many pet projects. Then why deny him a chance to visit US to accelerate and extend these partnerships? All there is out there is mere hearsay. Lies repeated and regurgitated a thousand times. To say that a person without any political background who became new Chief Minister (or for that matter any minister) of a large state like Gujarat not more than six months before the Godhra terrorist attack, who had spent most of his time attending the grievances of his fellow citizens after the massive earthquake in 2001, had somehow allegedly stage managed a state sponsored massacre of Muslims by allegedly telling his policemen down to a constable rank and file to not perform his or her duty, while at the same time deploying the army within 2 two days, knowing that doing so would be detrimental to his alleged "evil plan" is the most ludicrous argument I have ever heard from his detractors.
4. How can a Chief Minister of such a big state personally know policemen down to a constable rank and file within 6 months of getting into public office?
5. How can a person with no political background whatsoever leverage such a control over state machinery within a few months of democratically getting into power that he personally prevented local city level police from stopping alleged massacres?
6. Howsoever ludicrous it may sound, even if we assume that he prevented the police from protecting a specific section of society. It is very hard for us to believe that if not hundreds but at least tens of people, out of thousands of policemen and other armed forces who were on the ground zero, would have some conscience to expose such plan and would have revolted and refused to partake into aforementioned alleged unethical doings?
7. How can a Chief Minister who publicly appealed for peace and calm from his fellow citizens via state television Doordarshan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIRMR8zW0iI) on the very night of Godhra terrorist attack plan and execute such an elaborate "evil plan" to massacre his subjects while at the same time with emotions running so high be so smart as to not leave behind any trail of his alleged commission and omission? All of this in one night.
8. In 1984, when Delhi was burned, 8000 Sikhs were massacred and displaced in state sponsored pogrom by CONgress party goons, and no army was called in for 3 days, the then Prime Minister Rajiv 'Nero' Gandhi shamelessly justified the pogrom as "Big tree falls, earth shakes" (http://www.tribuneindia.com/2003/20031102/spectrum/main1.htm). In Gujarat's case the Chief Minister made continuous public calls for peace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIRMR8zW0iI), officially requested for Army on the very night of Godhra terrorist attack and deployed it as soon as it was available, why would he do so if his intentions were to target a section of citizens?
9. Why does Shri Modi detractor's heart not bleed for 59 Hindu pilgrims who were burnt alive in the train and 270 Hindus who died thereafter in the riots? Isn't spreading lies that thousands of Muslims died while the actual number is far less at 720 doing an injustice to the innocent Hindus who died as well. Please do not take me wrong. Every life lost, irrespective of the religion, is a loss for that great nation. But it seems that a Hindu's life is not as important and equal to a Muslim's life for anti-Modi bigots.
10. There has not been a single riot since 2002. Doesn't that reflect good on Shri Modi's leadership that as he got a hang of his public office, he has managed state machinery well. He could not do so in 2002 as he was new to any kind of public office, let alone post of Chief Minister.
11. Anti-Modi CONgress party's own Union Minister for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal admitted on the floor of Indian Parliament in Rajya Sabha that Shri Narendra Modi's government has full filled all its obligation of distributing relief and rehabilitating all the citizens, who were displaced due to riots, without any discrimination.
12. Then there are complete dolts who claim that Shri Modi has done such a marvelous job in progressing his state and its development as a contra to 2002. Really? I did not know that people could overnight develop such great leadership skills to brush under the carpet their alleged past activities. Lamest excuse ever! By the same logic, Delhi should have been a world class city by 1986 after anti-Sikh pogrom by CONgress party goons. But it only developed and got basic infrastructure such as Metro not until in 2001 under BJP government. Similarly, Bhagalpur, Varanasi, Nandigram, Bareilly, Gauhati, Bharat-Pakistan border area just after dreadful partition, etc. all should have become world class cities by now as most the Chief Ministers or local Ministers were allegedly complacent during riots in these areas. Most of were from CONgress party.
13. Foreign funded NGOs whose full time job is to level baseless accusations against Shri Modi have been many times found committing perjury, forging documents, falsifying witnesses, and have been reprimanded by courts.
14. Irrespective of whether Shri Modi may admit or not, but he is the best possible alternative Prime Minister to the current corrupt Sonia Gandhi led CONgress UPA government. And most of the Indian people want to see him as the next Prime Minister.

I think US has no locus standi to pass judgment on Shri Modi, Gujarat or Bharat when our own Human Rights records are very dismal. I believe it is highly hypocritical for US to

1. sabotage the local politics of Indian state of Gujarat, which has a democratically elected government and conducts free and fair election, by passing vile accusations on its workings.
2. interfere in the local politics of Indian state of Gujarat by condemning and passing immature judgment on a 3 times democratically elected Chief Minister who was elected after free and fair elections.
3. give or deny certificate of religious freedom to India which has seen origin of at least four different religions: Sanatan Dharam (Hinduism), Jain, Buddhist and Sikhism. It is Indian Hindus who protected and gave shelter, ironically in Gujarat, to those who were persecuted around the world: Parsis and Jews. When US's own body on religious freedom USCIRF does not even have a single Hindu member (to represent 1.2 Billion strong Hindu community) on its board and is filled with evangelical Christians and Muslims, how can we talk of religious equality? US is a country where most people will simply reject a Mitt Romney just because he is a Mormon. Talk about pontificating religious freedom!
4. deny visa to a democratically elected public official on mere hearsay of Leftist and Muslim lobbyists who spread canards without a shred of evidence. There is not even a single police FIR complaint registered in 10 long years even remotely implicating Shri Modi. So much so that even Honorable Indian Supreme Court monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) has found no evidence of Shri Modi's complicity, commission and omission.
5. still not fixing the mistake of denying visa to Shri Narendra Modi, whom the US Consul-General in Mumbai, Michael S Owen, described as a "no-nonsense, effective administrator who has reduced corruption in public life in Gujarat" and Owen admitted US government's hypocrisy and embarrassment of publicly giving Shri Modi a cold shoulder on visa issue.

Finally, not that there is any comparison and nor am I drawing any between the following two individuals. But the following facts do contrast and highlight the most hypocritical attitude of US. While we allow radical Islamic mass murderer Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who wants to blast Israel off the face of the earth, to freely travel to US and give lecture at Columbia University despite the fact the he oppresses minorities in Iran, Hindus and Jews cannot build temples in Iran, Gays are persecuted, youngsters are murdered for keeping Elmo hair style, democracy movements are crushed, there are no free and fair elections, there is no freedom of speech, women rights are flouted and women are publicly flogged. But it is all OK. On the other hand we imprudently deny visa to 3 times democratically elected Chief Minister who has taken his state from rags to riches. Shri Modi under whose rule, Muslim citizens of his state are economically and socially much more well off than in any other Indian states especially those (mis)ruled by CONgress party. Shri Modi under whose rule in Gujarat anyone can freely build Temple, Synagogue, Mosque or Church and practice his or her religion as they wish. An effective administrator who is the only no-nonsense incorruptible politician who is the rightful contender to be next prime minister of India. But we injudiciously deny him visa on a mere hearsay without a shred of evidence while contemptuously snubbing the Indian law of the land and jaundicing peoples mind that Shri Modi is guilty of fictitious charges without judge, jury or trial. Can we in the US call ourself democracy? When I see above mentioned facts, I am ashamed to say NO.

If this is not US hypocrisy that what is?! Give Shri Modi visa and give it now. And for God Sakes stop interfering in other democracies. We are not holier than thou.

Please reject Hinduphobic House Resolution 569 by Congressman Keith Ellison. It has religious bigotry written all over it and it will only make Hindu - US relation worse. If not rejected, this resolution will gratuitously demonize peace loving and patriotic Hindu-American community.

हाल ही मे "SIT का नरेन्द्र मोदी को समन्स" जैसी खबरें फैलाकर मोदी SIT के समक्ष उपस्थित नहीं हुए ओर मोदी ने सुप्रीम कोर्ट तथा SIT का अनादर किया ओर मोदीने तय तारीख पर अनुपस्थित रहकरीट SIT का अनादर किया जैसा आधारहीन "ओर् मनघडंत दुषप्रचार करके फिर एक बार गुजरात को बदनाम किया जा रहा है | इसलिए मजबुरी में देशवासियों को इस सार्वजनिक पत्र द्वारा सच्चाई बता रहा हुं |

सच्चाईः

• अखबारों की रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक SIT ने मुझे बुलवाया है, इसकी जानकारी मिलते ही सरकार के अधिक्रुत प्रवकता ने तत्काल ही बयान जारी किया कि नरेन्द्र मोदी संविधान के पालनकर्ता है ओर कानुन की प्रत्येक प्रर्किया में सहयोग देते रहे है तथा देते रहेगे |

पिछले २४ घंटे से देश में इस मनघडंत जानकारी के दुष्प्रचार का अभियान ऐसा चला कि कई प्रचार माध्यम भी उसके साधन बन गये मुझे आशा है कि अब ऐसा माध्यम भी सच्चा ओर सुधारात्मक अभिगम अपनएगे |

गोधरा और गोधरा घ्टना के बाद की घटनाओं के लिए गुजरात सरकार हमेंशा जांच आयोगो, जांच एजेसियों और सर्वोच्च न्यायालय-सभी की न्यायिक प्रक्रिया का आदर करती रही है और इसलिए ही इस विषय पर किसी भी मामले ओर बयानों के साथ जुडना राज्य सरकार ने उचित नहीं सम्झा |समग्र जांच हमेशा न्यायिक स्तर पर बिना के चलाती रहे इसलिए झुठ ओर बदनामी सहकर भी राज्य सरकारने मौन रखना ठीक सम्झा है |

अब जब पिछले २४ घन्टे का घटनाक्रम झुठ की पराकाष्ठा को पार कर चुका है तो सिर्फ सच्चाई क्या है यह देशवासियों को बताना मैने अपना कर्तव्य समझा है |

My beloved countrymen,

Namaskar,

I am constrained to write to you with a deep sense of anguish. Since last eight years canards have been spread against me. For the past one week if we analyse the allegations leveled against me, then the truth will become evident. Truth cannot be suppressed. It is now my duty to place before you the facts that brings out the importance of understanding what the truth really is.

After the 2002 Godhra incidents, I had categorically said in the Vidhan Sabha and in public that no one is above the Indian Constitution and the law, even if he happens to be the chief minister of a state. These are not mere words. My actions have reflected this statement in its true spirit. I assure you that this would be my stand in the future.

In spite of that, some vested interests without losing a single opportunity and with malicious pleasure and without bothering to ascertain the truth based on mere whims and fancies have been tarnishing the good image of Gujarat, my government and me.

Recently a systematic campaign to defame Gujarat through propagation of false reports titled “SIT summons Narendra Modi”; “Narendra Modi did not appear before SIT” and “Modi has shown disrespect to Supreme Court and SIT.” Such baseless allegations are being leveled once again against me to defame Gujarat.

I am therefore compelled to place the facts before my countrymen.

FACTS:

· As soon as newspapers began reporting that Modi has been summoned by the SIT, the government spokesperson immediately said that Shri Modi is bound by the law of the land and the Indian Constitution. He has always extended his cooperation to every procedure of law. And he is committed to do so in future.

· It is a matter of grave concern and needs investigation as to why and who started spreading lies that “SIT summons Narendra Modi on March 21, 2010”.

· The purveyors of untruth failed even to think that March 21, 2010 happens to be a Sunday and a public holiday.

· These purveyors of lies even did not once bother to check whether the key SIT officers, who are appoited by the Supreme Court, were present in Gujarat on March 21, 2010.

· SIT had not fixed March 21, 2010 for my appearance. To say that I was summoned on March 21 is completely false. I shall respond to the SIT fully respecting the law and keeping in view the dignity of a body appointed by the Supreme Court.

· The date of 21^st March 2010 was invented by some vested interest and as a part of their effort to interfere in the due process of law. They wanted to paint me as a person who refused to respond to the SIT. This country has in the last twenty four hours witnessed a campaign of disinformation in which a section of the media became an instrument of the disinformers. I hope this section will now take corrective steps.

My beloved countrymen,

The people of Gujarat and this country have identified those who are defaming Gujarat continuously since 2002. But I want to tell the truth that spreading falsehoods has only one single purpose and that is to instigate people. It is a sinful action which will harm the working of a democratic state. Seen in the backdrop of events in the last 24 hours it shows that there is a nexus among the vested interests in spreading lies against me in order to defame me. This machination has come unstuck and the people have seen through this charade.

Government of Gujarat has always honoured and cooperated with the investigative agencies, commissions and Supreme Court looking into Godhra and post-Godhra incidents. And that is why I never thought of giving a public statement on this issue. Despite unbearable pain, I decided to maintain silence in the belief that due process of law would take its own course.

But now as the lies reach a crescendo as never before I am compelled to bring the facts before the countrymen. I also consider it as my humble duty.

I hope the truth is not twisted by the purveyors of untruth to misguide the investigation. And I expect that the media would bring my deep pain and despair to the notice of the people.

(a): As per information made available by the State Government of Gujarat, 254 Hindus and 790 Muslim (including those killed in Police firing) were killed in the post Godhra riots of 2002.

(b): As per available information 223 persons have been reported missing, 2548 persons sustained injuries, 919 persons were rendered widows and 606 children were orphaned during the riots.

(c): The rates of compensation paid by the State Government of Gujarat are as under: An amount of Rs 1.5 lakhs has been paid as ex-gratia to the next of kin of each person killed.
In the case of those injured the rates of payment to each individual are as under: Rs.5,000 each to those with upto 10% disability; Rs.15,000 each to those with 10% to 30 % disability; Rs.25,000 each to those with 30% to 40% disability; Rs.50,000 each to those with more than 40% disability and permanent incapacitation.
In addition, relief has been extended by the State Government to the victims of the riots under the following heads:
i) Cash doles and assistance for house-hold kits;
ii) Food grains to Below Poverty Line families in riot affected areas;
iii) Housing Assistance;
iv) Rebuilding earning assets;
v) Rehabilitation of Small business;
vi) Assistance to Industries/shops and hotels;
vii) Interest subsidy on loans to affected units;
viii) Insurance paid to the affected; ix) Rehabilitation of orphaned children and widows; x) Integrated Child Development Scheme services to riot affected children, pregnant and lactating mothers;
xi) Widows` Pension, etc. The State Government has further informed that a total expenditure of Rs. 204.62 crores has been incurred towards relief and rehabilitation measures.

(d) : The State Government has informed that they have published the data as recommended by NHRC.

The myth and truth of Godhra

Since no 'secularist' or 'liberal' or 'objective' person ever challenged the above sets of figures, some questions arise: Who killed 200-odd Hindus so early in those riots? Was it the police or the Hindus themselves? And what made those 40,000 Hindus rush to relief camps? Was it fear of Hindu mob violence, rape, arson and murder?

Two recent 'news briefs' in print are critical evidence of a reality that's been totally ignored by our 'liberals' who have, for four years running, gone on and on and on about the 'genocide' of Muslims in Gujarat after the sudden inferno in the S-6 compartment of Sabarmati Express had consumed 58 Hindus, including 26 women and 12 children, returning home after performing kar seva at Ayodhya.

In its edition of March 19, 2006, The Sunday Express carried the following report from Ahmedabad:

"Post-Godhra riot case: 7 get lifer
The city sessions court on Friday convicted seven people in a post-Godhra riot case and sentenced them to life term for the murder of 35-year-old Mukesh Panchal, a resident of Lambha. He was attacked by the accused and went missing on November 7, 2003 from Shah-e-Alam Darwaza. His mutilated body was found near Chandoka Lake on November 11. One of the seven accused—Javed Shaukat Ali—meanwhile managed to give the cops a slip and fled from the court."

Additional Sessions Judge Sonia Gokani sentenced Mushtaq alias Kanio Ahmed Sheikh to 10 years in jail for murder and attempt to murder. Eight others were sentenced to 18 months in prison for unlawful assembly, possessing weapons and rioting."

Out of the five convictions so far in l'affaire Godhra, the above two rip the blindfold on Godhra that the country was subjected to since March 2002. Those two convictions conclusively prove that even as some Hindus in Vadodra, Ahmedabad and a few other parts of Gujarat were provoked into insane killing, arson and loot by the S-6 carnage, the Muslims in that state were hardly the cattle hiding from the slaughter house that they have been made out by the "secularists" in and outside our national English media. Do you, for instance, recall reading about the mutilation of Mukesh Panchal's cadaver in any of the English print media? Did you hear a sound byte about it on our TV?

Yes, despite all the media and the consequent political, propaganda about the 'genocide' of Gujarat's Muslims, the reality is that some of that community were also engaged in murder, rioting and unlawful assembly with arms in hand.

This trend was discernible to the objective person four years ago itself. Thus, in its issue of April 28, 2002, The Times of India reporter, Sanjay Pandey, told us that of the 726 people who had been killed by then in the post-Godhra riots, 168 were Hindus. In its issue of June 24, 2002, India Today carried an article saying that the official figure of all people killed in Gujarat in the three months following the S-6 massacre was 800, of which a quarter were Hindus. The Union Home Ministry's Annual Report 2002-03 said that about a third of the total dead in the Godhra riots were Hindus. It also said that, at one stage, 40,000 Hindus were in riot relief camps.

Since no 'secularist' or 'liberal' or 'objective' person ever challenged the above sets of figures, some questions arise: Who killed 200-odd Hindus so early in those riots? Was it the police or the Hindus themselves? And what made those 40,000 Hindus rush to relief camps? Was it fear of Hindu mob violence, rape, arson and murder?

More proof of the blindfold on Godhra came in 2005, when the UPA coalition (comprising the 'secular' friends of Muslims) made a statement in Parliament that 254 Hindus and 790 Muslims were killed in those riots.

But our national media simply refused to remove the blindfold on Godhra. Hence it was that the elites of our society continued to rant about the Gujarat 'pogrom of genocide'; some cussed Indians even conspired to deny a US visa to the Chief Minister of one of the country's fastest developing states.

Aiding and abetting that conspiracy were reports from Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International et al. The National Human Rights Commission joined in; written lies by the likes of Arundhati Roy and fake e-mails added fuel to the fire. All of them went to town about the Gujarat 'genocide' with blinkers on, a blindfold underneath. None wanted to touch upon the minority community's role in that tragedy.

But the latest criminal conviction of 16 Muslims evokes the recall of the Justice Tewatia Report on the Godhra issue published on April 26, 2002 under the aegis of the Council For International Affairs And Human Rights, based in New Delhi.

It was a report based on a six-day field study of a team headed by Justice D.S. Tewatia, former Chief Justice, Calcutta High Court and Punjab and Haryana High Court. Its other members were Dr J.C. Batra, senior advocate, Supreme Court, Dr Krishan Singh, academician, Jawahar Lal Kaul, veteran journalist, and Prof. B. K. Kuthiala, Dean, Faculty of Media Studies, G.J. University, Hisar.

The five-man team visited three affected areas and relief camps in Ahmedabad, interacting freely with the public and members of both communities, and without government interference. In Godhra, five delegations from both communities and also of mixed composition presented their views and facts to the team. Similarly, free discussions with the public and affected communities were held in Vadodra at seven affected areas and five relief camps. It collected information from the staff at the Godhra Railway Station, district administration, including the Collector and Police Commissioner, passengers traveling in Sabarmati Express on 27.02.02 in S-6 compartment as well as in other compartments, staff of the Fire Brigade, Godhra, reports in 22 newspapers and nine magazines (local, regional and Delhi) and views on media coverage articulated by some 500 persons including intellectuals like lawyers, doctors and businessmen. The site where the train was initially stopped and stoned was also visited. A high point was that 13 delegations consisting of 121 citizens met Justice Tewatia's team and presented their viewpoints and information. The delegations ranged from the Association of Hoteliers to a group of Vanvasis and affected Muslim as well as Hindu women.

Based on the considerable oral, audio and visual evidence obtained from the above interactions, the Justice Tewatia team's conclusions most relevant to the blindfold on Godhra were as follows:

1.
Burning of 58 Hindu pilgrims on February 27, 2002 was an act carried out at the behest of then government of Pakistan which had planned to burn the entire Sabarmati Express carrying some 2000 passengers. The primary objective was to create Hindu-Muslim communal conflagration in India. The actual perpetrators were jehadi elements in the predominantly Muslim town of Godhra where

a very high traffic of telephone calls was recorded between Godhra and Pakistan, especially Karachi, before the date of the carnage
2.
an abnormally large number of passports were issued,
3.
there was a large number of persons without ration cards
4.
a large number of unemployed Muslims had mobile phones,
5.
though there is no tradition of being a Muslim pilgrim center and the local Muslims are not affluent, three istema (religious gatherings) have been held and attended by large numbers of foreigners, and
6.
an Assistant Collector (a young Muslim from eastern UP) went on leave two days before the gory incident and did not return till the middle of March though the district of his posting was aflame with communal riots much earlier.

The vacuum pipe between the Coaches No. S-6 and S-7 was cut thereby preventing any further movement of the train. Miscreants threw bricks and stones at the train as soon as it left Godhra railway station. The stoning intensified after it finally stopped about 700 metres from the station. The passengers of the train, particularly Coaches S-5, S-6 and S-7, were the main targets. Burning missiles and acid bulbs were thrown on and in the coaches. One such acid missile landed in Coach S-7 and a fire started which the passengers were able to extinguish. But the attack continued and more burning missiles were thrown into the Coach S-6.
3.
In an effort to control the subsequent riots, the Gujarat government
4.
Publicly announced its decision to employ the Army on the evening of the day riots began on February 28 (Within less than 24 hours at least one brigade of Indian Army had air-landed at Ahmedabad),
5.
Made preventive arrests of over 33,000 people,
6.
Fired over 12,000 rounds of bullets,
7.
Fired over 15,000 rounds of tear gas shells,
8.
The involvement of Vanvasis in the post-Godhra riots added a new dimension to the communal violence. In rural areas the Vanvasis attacked the Muslim moneylenders, shopkeepers and the forest contractors. They used their traditional bow and arrows as also their implements used to cut trees and grass while attacking Muslims. They moved in groups and used coded signals for communication. Apparently, the accumulated anger of years of exploitation by Muslim moneylenders (interest of 50 per cent per annum), shopkeepers and forest contractors had become explosive after moneylenders sexually exploited their womenfolk.

The media selected, distorted and added fiction to prove their respective points of view. The code of ethics prescribed by the Press Council of India was violated by the media with impunity. It so enraged the citizens that several concerned citizens in the disturbed areas suggested that peace could return to the state only if some of the TV channels were closed for some weeks. Even the Vanvasis complained that the media had no time to hear their agony and was spreading canards against the Hindus. Newspapers published in English from Delhi invariably editorialised the news. Direct and indirect comments in the news writing were so telling that the personal likes and dislikes of the news reporters were too obvious to be missed. They appeared to have assumed the role of crusaders against the State Government from day one. It coloured the entire operation of newsgathering, feature writing and editorials.

Conclusions 1 to 4 above are indicators as to why our national media, ever afraid to criticise the Muslim and ever ready to indulge in BJP/Hindu bashing, bypassed the Justice Tewatia Report, despite its high credentials and the fact that it was publicly released at a press conference in New Delhi. After all, our 'secular' national media simply could not have tolerated giving even a line to report's conclusion 5 above. Hence, they simply buried the whole report itself, put a blindfold on the country vision of it. After all, they had found their Hindu-bashing agenda in the post-Godhra riots and they were hell-bent in pushing it full steam, right up to the Supreme Court and beyond to the United Nations.

Will the criminal conviction of 16 by two separate sessions judges in Ahmedabad remove the blindfold on Godhra that the 'monster media' put on the people of this country?

Special Investigation Team (SIT) gave sufficient grounds for the apex court to doubt the authenticity of incidents highlighted by her NGO Citizens for Justice and Peace.

The SIT, headed by former CBI Director RK Raghavan along with former DGP CB Satpathy and three senior IPS officers — Geetha Johri, Shivanand Jha and Ashish Bhatia — had been entrusted with the enquiry into post-Godhra riot incidents in Godhra, Gulbarg Society, Naroda Gaon, Naroda Patiya and Sardarpura.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohtagi, appearing for the State, read out portions of the report that refuted the petitioner’s charge of the State’s complicity in the riots.

Pointing out a specific instance, the SIT report stated how the evidence of 22 witnesses was “suspect” owing to the identical submissions made in their affidavits submitted to the court. On enquiry, the SIT found that all the 22 affidavits were drafted, typed and printed from the same computer, giving sufficient grounds to believe they were “tutored”. When the SIT questioned those who signed the affidavits, it was shocked to learn that these complainants were not even aware of the incidents.

Referring to another instance that exposed the Citizens for Justice and Peace’s much ‘trumpeted’ charges, Rohtagi said the SIT investigation found untrue allegation about a gangrape of a pregnant woman Kauser Bano, whose stomach was allegedly pierced by sword and her foetus killed.

Even the instance of dumping of bodies into a well at Naroda Patiya and a charge of the police allegedly shielding accused persons in murder of a British national was found to be untrue, Rohtagi said.

Firing a salvo at the NGO, Rohtagi said, “It is clear from the report that the horrendous allegations made by the NGO were false. Cyclostyled affidavits were supplied by a social activist and the allegations made in them were untrue,” he added, with an obvious reference to Setalvad.

NGOs, Teesta spiced up Gujarat riot incidents: SIT

The Special Investigation Team responsible for the arrests of those accused in Gujarat riots has severely censured NGOs and social activist Teesta Setalvad who campaigned for the riot victims.

Many incidents of killings and violence were cooked up, false charges were levelled against then police chief P C Pandey and false witnesses were tutored to give evidence about imaginary incidents, the SIT said in a report submitted before a Bench comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat, P Sathasivam and Aftab Alam.

The SIT said it had been alleged in the Gulbarg Society case that Pandey, instead of taking measures to protect people facing the wrath of rioteers, was helping the mob. The truth was that he was helping with hospitalisation of riot victims and making arrangements for police bandobast, Gujarat counsel, senior advocate Mukul Rohtagi, said quoting from the SIT report.

Rohtagi also said that 22 witnesses, who had submitted identical affidavits before various courts relating to riot incidents, were questioned by the SIT which found that they had been tutored and handed over the affidavits by Setalvad and that they had not actually witnessed the riot incidents.

The SIT also found no truth in the following incidents widely publicised by the NGOs:

* A pregnant Muslim woman Kausar Banu was gangraped by a mob, who then gouged out the foetus with sharp weapons

* Dumping of dead bodies into a well by rioteers at Naroda Patiya

* Police botching up investigation into the killing of British nationals, who were on a visit to Gujarat and unfortunately got caught in the riots

Rohtagi said: "On a reading of the report, it is clear that horrendous allegations made by the NGOs were false. Stereotyped affidavits were supplied by a social activist and the allegations made in them were found untrue."

Obviously happy with the fresh findings of the SIT which was responsible for the recent arrests of former Gujarat minister Maya Kodanani and VHP leader Jaideep Patel, Rohtagi tried to spruce up the image of the Modi administration, which was castigated in the Best Bakery case by the apex court as "modern day Neros"

Teesta Setalvad/CPI(M) bribed riot witnesses before trial, threatened others

While the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America (VHPA), Inc. (World Hindu Council of America) cleared its stand on the alleged response by Sonal Shah to the unfounded accusations which were part of the Anti-Hindu communal propaganda by Evangelic-Leftist groups in the US. The truth about known Anti-Hindu bigot Teesta Setalvad was exposed a few days ago by the victims of the riots that happened in Gujarat after the terrorist attack in Godhra by Muslims. 58 Hindus (including 20 children, 15 women, and 23 men) were burnt alive using 140 liters by Muslim Terrorists as proved by the Nanavati-Mehta Commission report made public recently. And then happened despicable violence in its aftermath. As per the figures given by the Union Minister of State for Home Prakash Jaiswal, who belongs to the Congress Party, in Parliament on May 11 2005, 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus were killed in the riots, 2548 people were injured and 223 people were missing.

The revelation a few days ago was that a host of Gujarat riot case victims were misled into signing affidavits giving false information at the behest of Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), an NGO headed by Teesta Setalvad. Teesta Setalvad willfully fabricated and submitted incorrect information to Courts.

Daily Pioneer has brought out another revelation about Teesta who is one of the many fanatic Pseudo-Secular fundamentalist out there who don't believe in Majority Rights. Apparently, Teesta's Gujarat-based NGO processed payment from CPM relief fund to pay the witnesses just before the trial.

A controversial Gujarat-based NGO was instrumental in organising payment of Rs 1 lakh each to as many as ten witnesses in various post-Godhra riot cases. The money came from the CPI(M) relief fund and was distributed months before the witnesses deposed in the courts, five years after the clashes took place. Four other eyewitnesses received Rs 50,000 each.

The revelation comes in the backdrop of reports that a host of Gujarat riot case victims were misled into signing affidavits giving false information at the behest of Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), an NGO headed by social activist Teesta Setalvad.

Incidentally, those who were both victims and eyewitnesses received Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 while the victims got mere Rs 5,000 each. This has raised eyebrows over the selection of beneficiaries and the purpose of paying a disproportionately large sum to the eyewitnesses before the trial.

Chief Coordinator of CJP Rais Khan told The Pioneer that he had submitted the name of beneficiaries to the CPI(M) on instruction from Teesta Setalvad. “Setalvad identified the people and I merely followed her instruction and forwarded the list to CPI (M),” Khan said.

When contacted, Setalvad said she was present at the function on an invitation from the CPI(M) and had nothing to do with fund raising. “It was CPI(M) money and I was a mere guest at the function,” she claimed.

Yasin Naimudin Ansari, one of the eyewitnesses who got one lakh rupees, told The Pioneer on phone from Ahmedabad that he was approached by someone from Teesta Setalvad's organisation. "I vaguely remember this. But I don't remember the name of the person," he said.

The function took place in Ahmedabad on August 26, 2007 and the witnesses were handed out demand drafts by CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat, Teesta Setalvad and Rais Khan.

The Pioneer is in possession of letters written by beneficiaries thanking Brinda, Teesta and Rais Khan for the payment.

Yasmin Banu Ismailbhai Shaikh (aunt of Zahira) of Baroda, who received Rs 50,000 (DD No 567552 dated August 1, 2007). Yasmin is a complainant in case No. 114/04 at Baroda. It is interesting to note that, when no substance was found in her complaint, she was directed to face lie detection test by the court and ever since she has not appeared in the court.

Among the recipients are four Best Bakery case witnesses and nine are appearing as witnesses in Ahmedabad-related Naroda Patia, Shahpur, Khanpur and other 2002 riot cases.

The information has been gleaned through a string of petitions under the Right to Information Act by one H Jhaveri from various agencies, including banks.

As a consequence of the above revelations, Teesta Setalvad's former confidant Raees Khan has filed a FIR against her for threatening him.

"I have filed an FIR (First Information Report) against Teesta today at Rakhial police station. She is behind the threatening calls that I am receiving for the past couple of days," said Raees Khan, a former confidant and once the coordinator here for Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP).

Khan said late on Friday evening that he had to take this step as calls were made to him from Ahmedabad railway station warning him and his family of dire consequence if "I turn out to be a nuisance to Teesta".

"Do not say anything about Teesta. Do not address the media. Keep strictly away from media persons. Even if one word is spoken against Teesta, you and your family will have to pay a heavy price," Khan quoted the caller as saying.

"Today my application was accepted by the Rakhial police inspector and also an FIR was filed. I also met the assistant commissioner police and told him the reason behind my seeking police protection," Khan said.

In his complaint, Raees Khan has directly accused Teesta. "If I am attacked or if anything happens to my family, I will hold Teesta personally responsible," Khan said in the FIR, adding that though he had no enmity with Teesta, she was hounding and threatening him.

"'I will send you to a place from where you will not return', Teesta had warned me recently when I asked for my two months' salary dues," Khan said.

Raees Khan is in the eye of the storm after he was accused of distorting facts in affidavits of the six Naroda Gam witnesses viz., Madina Pathan, Maqsoon Pathan, Rafiq Sheikh, Mohammed Malik, Rafiq Malik and Rahim Malik when he filed their affidavits in 2003.

These witnesses have deposed before the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) that they did not know about the content of affidavits filed before the Supreme Court.

"I did my duties diligently at the office located at Shahpur and all went well until 2007 when she unceremoniously sacked me. She was at her abusive best when she showed me the door," Khan said.

"I have not been paid my two months' salary. The computer and the fax machine and other stationery items belonged to me as I had purchased with my own money and have receipts to prove it. Yet she has taken all of it, claiming that it belonged to her. When I demanded that my property be returned, she said she would fix me in such a way that I will be rotting behind bars for the rest of the life," Khan told IANS.

He also alleges that yet, when he went ahead undeterred and demanded his dues he was approached by people close to Teesta who advised him not to tangle with Teesta.

"'She is too powerful and she can harm you irreparably. It is better you keep away from her', they had advised me," Khan said.
